Eli Lilly's Revenue Soars 39% Driven by Obesity Medications

Eli Lilly boosts revenue forecast to $91-$92 billion, fueled by demand for its obesity drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Eli Lilly has reported an impressive 39% increase in revenue, largely attributed to the growing demand for its obesity drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound. As a result, the company has revised its revenue expectations for the full year, now estimating between $91 billion and $92 billion. This revision represents a notable increase of $5 billion from its earlier forecast.

Strong Performance and Increased Guidance

During a recent financial briefing, CEO David Ricks commented on the company’s robust performance, stating, "We delivered another strong quarter and were able to raise our full-year outlook." This growth is not only due to Mounjaro and Zepbound's success but also the expanded coverage of obesity treatments in the United States.

Interestingly, a portion of the reported revenue, around $900 million, was contributed by profit, including a significant $410 million milestone related to Jardiance, a diabetes medication that Eli Lilly co-markets with Germany’s Boehringer Ingelheim.

Diverse Growth Drivers

Beyond the success of tirzepatide, Eli Lilly’s portfolio includes other promising candidates. One such drug is Orforglipron, an oral GLP-1 treatment that gained FDA approval in April. This medication amassed an impressive $281 million in cumulative sales since its launch in the second quarter, with $184 million generated just in the latest quarter.

Adding to this excitement is retatrutide, a triple hormone receptor agonist taken once a week, which in a head-to-head Phase 3 trial showed more than double the weight-loss effect compared to Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic. This study, involving participants with type 2 diabetes, met all primary and secondary endpoints after 80 weeks.

Market Landscape and Future Expectations

The results indicate that Eli Lilly is maintaining a strong position in the competitive obesity treatment landscape. While Novo Nordisk was the first to introduce Wegovy and Ozempic, Lilly's continued expansion of prescriptions has allowed it to achieve notable revenue growth. This momentum is further bolstered by a trend toward broader insurance coverage for obesity treatments in the U.S.

The recent adjustment of the company's revenue guidance—after only two months—may also reflect increasing market expectations, raising questions about potential future approvals for the newer drugs in their pipeline.

Market Value Milestone

Eli Lilly's market capitalization has surged past significant competitors like Samsung Electronics and Berkshire Hathaway, highlighting the growing influence of the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors among the largest companies globally. With projections suggesting over $90 billion in annual revenue driven by obesity treatments alone, the question remains whether investment in healthcare growth stocks will continue to thrive in the fourth quarter.
