Faster Biological Ageing May Help Explain Rising Cancer Rates in Under-55s

People born more recently show signs of ageing faster at the cellular level than earlier generations did at the same chronological age, and that difference may be part of why cancer diagnoses are rising among adults under 55. The work offers a mechanism for a trend that has been documented for years without a satisfying explanation.

The trend it addresses

Cancers that were overwhelmingly diseases of later life are turning up earlier. Colorectal cancer is the most-discussed example, with incidence in younger adults rising steadily across many countries, but it is not alone. Because the increase spans multiple cancer types and multiple health systems, explanations confined to screening practice have never accounted for all of it.

What biological age means here

Chronological age counts birthdays. Biological age is estimated from measurements that track how worn the body actually is -- patterns of chemical marking on DNA, inflammatory markers, and other indicators that shift as tissue ages. Two people of the same age can differ substantially. In this analysis, successive birth cohorts showed progressively higher biological age relative to their years, and those with the largest gap had the higher cancer risk.

Why ageing and cancer are connected

Cancer is in large part a disease of accumulated damage. Every cell division carries a small chance of a mutation that is not repaired; the immune surveillance that removes abnormal cells becomes less effective over time; and chronic inflammation supplies an environment in which damaged cells persist. Anything that accelerates that process would be expected to bring the diagnosis forward.

What would drive the acceleration

The study points at the pattern rather than its cause. The candidates are the ones already under investigation for early-onset cancer: obesity and its metabolic consequences, changes in diet including ultra-processed food, disrupted sleep and circadian rhythm, sedentary work, and changes to the gut microbiome. Disentangling those is difficult because they have all moved in the same direction over the same decades.

What it does not mean

An individual cannot read their cancer risk off a commercial biological-age test, and none of these measures is validated for that use. The finding is about populations.

Bottom line

Symptoms in a young adult deserve the same investigation they would get in an older one. Persistent change in bowel habit, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss or a lump should be assessed rather than attributed to age -- and screening, where you are eligible for it, should be taken up.
