Windows 11 Introduces Built-In Speed Test Feature
Microsoft unveils a new built-in internet speed test tool for Windows 11 that simplifies connectivity checks.
Microsoft has made a significant enhancement to Windows 11 by introducing a built-in internet speed test tool. This feature allows users to assess their internet connectivity right from the operating system without the need to navigate to external websites or rely on third-party applications.
The Need for Speed Testing
Many Windows PC users have likely experienced moments when their internet speed felt sluggish. To determine if connection speeds align with what internet service providers promise, users previously had to access external websites like Ookla or Bing for testing. The new built-in speed test aims to streamline this process, making it more convenient for users.
Gaining Access to the New Tool
To utilize the internet speed test, users must join Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program and should select the Experimental channel. This step is crucial as the latest updates are only available to those enrolled in this program. It’s advisable to avoid installing Experimental builds on primary devices, as they can sometimes be unstable. Instead, consider using a spare device, setting up a dual-boot environment, or employing a virtual machine.
After signing up, users should activate the new feature by following these steps:
- Open the Settings menu.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select the Windows Insider Program option.
- Click on Feature Flags.
- Find the Quick Settings Speed Test and enable it.
Make sure to restart your PC to apply the changes.
Using the Integrated Speed Test
Once your device restarts, accessing the new speed test is simple. You can choose one of two options:
- Left-click on the System tray and select Speed Test from the Quick Settings menu.
- Right-click on the Network icon and choose the "Test Internet Speed" option.
Upon opening the tool, click the "Test" button. As the test runs, it will display real-time graphs showing both download and upload speeds.
A Major Improvement
Previously, Windows 11 users could test their internet speed by right-clicking the Network icon, but this feature redirected users to a Bing search page, interrupting their workflow. The new built-in speed test integrates the function seamlessly, allowing users to assess their connections without leaving their current tasks.
Microsoft has indicated that the testing tool operates based on the current internet connection, thereby providing an accurate performance assessment. While the exact details of the technology behind the speed test haven't been disclosed, the tool is noted to be powered by Ookla's SpeedTest, a trusted name in internet speed measurement.
In early trials, comparisons between the built-in tool and tests executed via Ookla's platform yielded similar results for download and upload speeds, indicating the new feature's reliability.
What Lies Ahead
The integration of the speed test tool represents a welcome addition to Windows 11, yet, as it is currently available only in the Experimental channel, a broader rollout is still awaited. Users have expressed excitement for the official launch of this feature, hoping it will soon be available to enhance their overall Windows experience.
