Understanding Garmin Sleep Scores: A Personal Journey

Explore how Garmin's sleep tracking impacts my running performance and sleep quality.

Understanding Garmin Sleep Scores: A Personal Journey

Since beginning to track my sleep with my Garmin device, I've developed a keen awareness of how vital quality rest is for my daily activities. Wearing it throughout the day, I've grown curious about the relationship between my sleep score and my overall well-being.

The Reality of Sleep Scores

Interestingly, I've noticed that even when I feel well-rested, my sleep score doesn't always reflect that. Conversely, on days when I doubt my restfulness, I can be pleasantly surprised by a high score. I've observed a clear connection: a high sleep score often translates to increased energy for both my work and running sessions.

Garmin's Sleep Recommendations

Garmin's guidance suggests aiming for about 8 hours of sleep each night. However, the average sleep duration for many in Japan hovers around 6 to 6.5 hours. Personally, I strive for a score of 80 or above. Even if I don’t log a full 8 hours, I find that good quality sleep can still help me achieve that 80 threshold.

Insights from a Week's Data

Analyzing my sleep data over the past week revealed a surprising truth: more sleep hours don’t automatically mean a better score. I’ve learned to pay attention to my sleep score, especially before my running days. If I only manage to get 6 hours of sleep or less and my score dips below 70, I often choose to skip an intense workout. Instead, I might opt for a gentle recovery jog.

Napping or going back to sleep to improve my score isn't an effective solution for me, as I struggle to drift back off once I'm awake. If you’re interested, I shared more about my struggles with sleep in a previous article.

The Impact of Alcohol on Sleep

One crucial lesson I've learned is the importance of avoiding alcohol before major races. While it’s known to help with hydration and digestion, abstaining from alcohol has significantly improved my sleep quality and recovery. Based on my experiences, if I commit to several alcohol-free days leading up to a race, I notice a marked improvement in my sleep quality. This preparation proves helpful, especially on race days when nerves may disrupt my ability to rest well.

When traveling for races, I sometimes find it hard to sleep in unfamiliar locations. However, as long as I’ve been sleeping well beforehand, I can manage the race without facing fatigue.

Is Garmin Too Strict?

I often wonder if Garmin's metrics are perhaps too stringent. When evaluating their 8-hour recommendation, I question whether they focus more on duration, quality, or if there are other factors at play. I consider myself fortunate; my partner and I have made lifestyle choices that support longer sleep durations. With no television in our home, we tend to create a more peaceful environment conducive to rest.

This reflection leads me to continually seek ways to enhance my sleep quality, which I believe correlates directly to my performance in running.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my experiences with Garmin's sleep tracking.
