Taiwan's Fitness Sector Sees Dramatic Growth Amid Health Trends

Significant Surge in Fitness Facilities

The fitness industry in Taiwan has seen remarkable progress, expanding by 45.7% over the last five years. Current data from the Ministry of Finance reveals a record number of gyms, highlighting a shift in public attitudes towards health and fitness.

According to the Ministry's statistics, from 2020 to July 2023, the number of sports facilities in Taiwan increased from 2,106 to 3,069. This growth is accompanied by a substantial rise in revenue, which jumped from NT$29.89 billion (approximately US$919.5 million) to NT$42.6 billion, reflecting a 42.5% increase.

Explosive Growth in Fitness Centers

Fitness centers have played a pivotal role in this growth, with the record count of 1,127 centers noted last year, marking an impressive 54.8% increase from 2020. As of July this year, the number climbed to 1,166, making up 36% of all sports facilities and positioning fitness centers as the largest segment of the industry, surpassing golf courses and swimming pools.

This surge can be attributed to the accessibility and versatility of fitness centers. The ability to maintain operations despite varying weather conditions has made these facilities increasingly popular among the public.

Diversification of Services

Beyond just traditional equipment, fitness centers have expanded their offerings to include group classes and personal training programs, appealing to a broader audience. This shift in focus has been instrumental in attracting new users and encouraging ongoing patronage.

The report indicates a generally positive trajectory for revenue in the sector, with one exception. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, earnings dropped to NT$12.36 billion. However, in 2022, revenue rebounded to NT$21.25 billion, surpassing NT$20 billion for the first time and marking a striking 39.7% increase over the past five years.

Regional Insights

The distribution of fitness centers is notably concentrated in Taiwan's six special municipalities, which have a total of 840 fitness facilities, representing 74.5% of the national total. Taipei leads with 181 centers, while Taichung follows with 173.

This concentration also extends to revenue generation, with these municipalities responsible for 82% of the national fitness center income. Taipei alone generated NT$4.03 billion, outpacing cities like New Taipei City and Taichung.

In terms of growth rates, Taoyuan has seen the fastest increase in fitness centers with over 160% rise since 2020. Revenue growth remained consistent across these municipalities, varying between 25.2% and 53.3%.

Revenue Trends and Future Outlook

Last year’s data indicates that New Taipei City had the highest average annual revenue per fitness facility, tallying NT$25.01 million. On the other hand, Taoyuan reported the lowest at NT$14.38 million, a figure that dropped by over 40% since 2020—a potential indication of stiff market competition.

The outlook for Taiwan's fitness industry seems positive as health consciousness continues to rise and the demand for accessible fitness options increases. It will be interesting to observe how fitness centers adapt and evolve to meet the needs of an ever-growing health-focused population.
