Samsung's Galaxy Ring Gains FDA Approval for Enhanced Sleep Apnea Monitoring

The Galaxy Ring now features advanced sleep apnea detection after receiving FDA approval, helping users understand their sleep quality better.

Samsung's Galaxy Ring Gains FDA Approval for Enhanced Sleep Apnea Monitoring

Samsung has unveiled significant advancements in sleep health technology with its Galaxy Ring, following FDA approval for its enhanced sleep apnea detection feature announced in July. This development aims to provide users with valuable insights into their sleep patterns, especially for those who often wake up feeling fatigued despite a full night’s rest.

New FDA Approval Expands Detection Capabilities

Originally, Samsung obtained FDA authorization for sleep apnea detection in its Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring devices earlier in February 2024. This De Novo clearance, which is designated for health devices that are new to the market and are not considered a risk to users, initially focused on recognizing symptoms of moderate to severe sleep apnea.

The newly approved feature not only retains this capability but also employs artificial intelligence to assess the frequency of breathing interruptions experienced during sleep. For optimal results, users are required to wear the device for a minimum of five hours over two nights within a ten-day period. The Samsung Health Monitor app can then evaluate the data and determine if the user experiences mild, occasional, or frequent sleep apnea. It’s important to note, however, that a proper diagnosis should still be conducted by a healthcare professional; the device is intended to facilitate discussions with doctors on this matter.

Standout Features and Competition

Samsung’s enhanced sleep apnea detection feature places the Galaxy Ring ahead of its main competitors, Oura and Superhuman, which currently lack FDA-approved sleep apnea monitoring capabilities. That said, both competitors can track nighttime events that might suggest the presence of sleep apnea.

In addition to this competitive landscape, Samsung and Oura are embroiled in a legal battle over smart ring patents, with a preliminary ruling anticipated soon.

Wider Availability Across Devices

Alongside the Galaxy Ring, the advanced sleep apnea feature is also accessible on the Galaxy Watch 9, running Wear OS 7.0 or later. Users of the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 can look forward to receiving this functionality through upcoming software updates.

In efforts to assist users with their sleep wellness further, Samsung has made significant improvements to its Sleep Coaching feature. The revamped tool now demands less data input from users, making it easier for them to receive tailored sleep guidance.

Conclusion

With the FDA officially recognizing the Galaxy Ring's capabilities, Samsung is making remarkable strides in the realm of sleep health technology. Their focus on enhancing sleep apnea monitoring and providing users with actionable insights has the potential to greatly improve how people manage their sleep health.
