Samsung Galaxy Ring: A Game Changer in Sleep Apnea Detection

The FDA-cleared Samsung Galaxy Ring now enables users to screen for sleep apnea risk with ease.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: A Game Changer in Sleep Apnea Detection

Samsung has introduced a groundbreaking innovation in sleep health with its Galaxy Ring, the first of its kind to receive FDA clearance for detecting sleep apnea risk. This small, wearable device can identify signs of serious breathing disruptions during sleep by monitoring just two nights of data.

FDA Clearance for Sleep Apnea Detection

The Galaxy Ring's enhanced sleep apnea screening feature is now officially available in the U.S., following its clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2026. It follows a similar approval from South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in October, making it a trailblazer in the wearable technology market. This advancement allows users to screen for obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by repetitive interruptions in breathing during sleep.

A Comfortable Alternative to Smartwatches

One of the standout benefits of the Samsung Galaxy Ring is its comfort and convenience. Unlike traditional smartwatches, the lightweight ring is designed for overnight wear on the finger, catering to those who find wrist-mounted devices cumbersome during sleep.

To utilize this feature, users only need to wear the ring for two nights within a 10-day period, ensuring at least five hours of valid sleep data each night. The device will analyze the collected data to identify patterns that may signify moderate to severe sleep apnea.

Advanced Monitoring with a New Algorithm

The upgraded algorithm offers more than just a yes/no answer regarding breathing abnormalities during sleep. It now provides insights into the frequency of breathing disruptions per hour. This data is collected using the sensors in the ring, including blood oxygen levels and movement patterns. Through the Samsung Health Monitor app, users can easily view their results and share them with healthcare professionals if needed.

However, it's crucial to note that the Galaxy Ring serves as a screening tool rather than a diagnostic device. While the technology can flag potential sleep apnea risk, it cannot replace a formal clinical diagnosis, and users should still consult healthcare providers if they experience symptoms like excessive daytime sleepiness or loud snoring.

Expansion of Sleep Health Technology

Samsung's move into the smart ring sphere expands upon its original FDA-approved sleep apnea detection technology, which was first introduced on compatible Galaxy Watch models in February 2024. With these advancements, cyclists and endurance athletes can monitor their overnight breathing patterns to assist in evaluating their recovery and sleep well-being, although the screening results should not be seen as substitutes for thorough evaluations of athletic performance.

The Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch9 running Wear OS 7.0 or later are the primary devices supported for this feature. Compatibility is set to grow in the future for Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch8 through software updates. Importantly, this screening tool is targeted at adults aged 18 and older who have not yet received a sleep apnea diagnosis. It is intended for occasional use rather than continuous monitoring, and results should prompt discussions with qualified healthcare providers before any treatment decisions.
