Revolutionary AI and Dogs Team Up to Detect Cancer Early
Bengaluru's Dognosis startup is leveraging AI and canine senses for early cancer detection, boasting impressive accuracy.
Canine Companions as Cancer Detectives
Imagine if man's best friend could help detect cancer before symptoms even appear. Two innovative founders from Bengaluru are on a mission to make this a reality. They believe that, combined with advanced technology, the innate smelling abilities of dogs could lead to early cancer detection.
Dognosis: Pioneering a New Approach
A Bengaluru startup, named Dognosis, is exploring a groundbreaking method that utilizes the extraordinary olfactory senses of dogs, along with biometric sensors and artificial intelligence. This unique approach aims to identify seven types of cancer through breath samples.
Recent research published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology shows that this method demonstrates a remarkable accuracy, with 90.8% sensitivity and 91.3% specificity. The cancers that can potentially be detected include:
- Head and Neck Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Lung and Thoracic Cancer
- Gynecological Cancers
- Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Cancers
- Genitourinary Cancers
Notably, the method showcases an impressive ability to identify early-stage cancers, boasting a sensitivity of 90.6%.
The Process: How It Works
Patients participating in this innovative screening will wear cotton surgical masks for about ten minutes. The masks are then sealed and sent to a central laboratory, where trained dogs evaluate the breath samples. These dogs are capable of detecting specific odour signatures associated with cancer that arise from volatile organic compounds produced by cancer cells.
Co-founders Akash Kulgod and Itamar Bitan are dedicated to developing this non-invasive technology, which promises to revolutionize cancer screening methods. Dognosis has garnered support from various venture-capital firms like Accel India, Boost VC, 1517 Fund, and Caffeinated Capital, underscoring the startup's potential.
Future Prospects: At-Home Cancer Screening
Looking ahead, Dognosis plans to introduce an at-home breath test in India, aiming for a launch in 2027. This innovative test will facilitate screening for multiple cancers before any warning signs emerge, and is estimated to be available at a cost of just a few thousand rupees.
Importance of Early Detection
Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy, an oncologist, emphasizes the significance of early cancer detection. Identifying cancer at stage one can elevate the five-year survival rate to over 90% for major cancer types such as breast, colorectal, and cervical cancers. When tumors are detected early, they are often small enough to be removed surgically or treated with radiation, eliminating the need for high doses of chemotherapy.
The Takeaway
The partnership between dogs and artificial intelligence holds immense promise for the future of cancer detection. With further advancements in technology, we may soon have an effective and user-friendly way to screen for cancer, providing hope for countless individuals.
