Revamping Legacy IT: The Role of Agentic AI in Modernization

Legacy IT systems are challenging to modernize, but agentic AI could provide a breakthrough. Discover how it reshapes efforts for today’s tech.

As technology continues to evolve, the need for effective IT modernization has never been more critical. Organizations face the task of transitioning away from outdated systems, which can often feel like an uphill battle.

The Need for Modernization

For decades, IT modernization has been a priority for Chief Information Officers (CIOs). This typically involves updating applications from traditional mainframes to newer platforms, whether they are on-site or in the cloud.

Unfortunately, many of these modernization initiatives have not delivered the expected results. A recent report from Kyndryl highlighted that less than 50% of respondents were satisfied with improvements to IT operations. Furthermore, only 10% of organizations have incorporated agentic AI to assist in their modernization efforts.

Understanding Agentic AI's Impact

Agentic AI presents an innovative solution that could redefine how organizations approach modernization. Unlike traditional methods that focus merely on replacing old systems, agentic AI aims to enhance the functionality of existing IT architectures, providing a fresh perspective on technological upgrades.

Mapping Dependencies Better

A major benefit of agentic AI lies in its ability to clarify hidden dependencies between older and newer systems. The Kyndryl report revealed that an overwhelming majority of organizations lack confidence in their understanding of these dependencies, leading to a significant oversight in their modernization strategies.

Automating Routine Tasks

Agentic AI excels at automating traditionally tedious processes, such as code creation and documentation. By streamlining these functions, organizations can minimize human error and significantly reduce time spent on manual tasks, thus accelerating their modernization timelines.

Shifting Motivations

The motivations for modernization are also shifting. Kyndryl's findings suggest that the focus is moving away from merely cutting costs to enhancing overall capabilities and efficiency as AI becomes integrated into everyday operations.

Ongoing Challenges in Modernization

Despite the promise shown by agentic AI, challenges surrounding IT modernization persist. A staggering 40% of enterprises continue to operate mainframes, rendering the goal of modernization an elusive target.

Andy Thurai, founder of The Field CTO and a former strategist at IBM, likened IT modernization to a chronic condition, stating that firms often find themselves in a cycle that never quite reaches completion.

Another hurdle is the tendency for organizations to accumulate new software without phasing out older systems. This practice leads to a buildup of technical debt, complicating future upgrades and maintenance.

The Economics of AI Implementation

Increasingly, vendors are promoting AI as a universal fix for IT problems. However, Thurai cautioned that this narrative could produce unexpected consequences, such as uncontrolled infrastructure costs. In fact, around 30% of IT leaders express concern that AI could result in unpredictable computing expenses.

It remains crucial for organizations to approach their modernization efforts realistically, balancing innovation with rational economic frameworks.

Looking Forward

The path to modern IT systems is fraught with challenges, and while agentic AI shows promise, it is clear that no single solution can address all issues. Today's advanced architectures may soon become the legacy systems of tomorrow, necessitating continued evolution.

Although agentic AI provides a valuable tool for improving visibility and operational efficiency, organizations must remain vigilant about ongoing modernization efforts. The cycle of updating and enhancing technology within IT environments is ongoing, and embracing flexibility will be vital for future successes.
