Queen Highlights Urgent Need for Child Mental Health Support

KUALA LUMPUR: Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah has voiced significant concern regarding the escalating mental health challenges faced by children and adolescents, which have tragically resulted in loss of life.

Focus on Early Identification

The queen has stressed the need for early recognition of emotional distress among young people and the provision of timely support. In response to her concerns, Istana Negara is taking proactive steps to bolster mental health initiatives.

Collaborative Efforts for Support Systems

As part of these proactive measures, discussions were convened on enhancing counselling and complaint mechanisms to better address the needs of youths grappling with mental health issues. The dialogue, led by Istana Negara's grand chamberlain Azuan Effendy Zairakithnaini, included representatives from various government ministries such as the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

The aim of this partnership is to ensure effective, safe, and accessible channels for students to seek help. The focus is not only on identifying emotional distress but also on developing proper support structures for those who require assistance.

Role of Counseling Organizations

To strengthen this initiative, Persatuan Kaunseling Malaysia is collaborating with the aforementioned ministry to engage registered and trained counsellors. This commitment highlights the importance of having qualified professionals available to aid young individuals during challenging times.

Collective Responsibility for Youth Well-Being

Raja Zarith Sofiah emphasized the significance of prioritizing the mental health of children and adolescents. She reminded the public that it is a shared responsibility, irrespective of one’s status or profession, to protect the physical and mental health of the younger generation.

“It is crucial for them to feel loved and supported,” the queen remarked. “We must continuously raise awareness about mental health so that early signs of distress can be detected and dealt with appropriately.”

The queen’s advocacy underlines a growing recognition of the mental health crisis among younger populations in Malaysia, calling for urgent action and community involvement to safeguard their emotional well-being.
