Punjab Officials Seize Over 3,500 Kg of Ghee in Food Safety Raid

Authorities in Ludhiana confiscated a large quantity of potentially substandard ghee amid heightened inspections for food safety compliance.

The Health Department of Punjab has made a substantial intervention in Ludhiana, seizing 3,540 kg of desi ghee and destroying 675 kg of expired product during a recent raid at a manufacturing facility in Kailash Nagar. This operation is part of a proactive initiative aimed at ensuring food safety as the festive season approaches.

Inspection Uncovers Large Quantities of Ghee

The inspection was part of an enhanced effort to address the presence of adulterated and low-quality food products. At the Kailash Nagar site, food safety officials discovered an extensive inventory comprising both branded and loose ghee. Among the seized stock, 135 kg came from well-known brands such as Sartaj, Dayal, and Dairy Farm, while a significant portion of 3,405 kg was found as unbranded loose ghee.

In the course of the operation, authorities oversaw the immediate elimination of 675 kg of expired desi ghee to eliminate any risk to public health.

Assessments and Future Actions

Officials conducted thorough checks not only on the products but also on the facility's storage conditions, labeling practices, and overall hygiene standards. They meticulously reviewed the expiry dates on the products to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

As part of the investigation, six samples were collected—five from various ghee batches and one from mustard oil. These samples have been forwarded to a government laboratory for comprehensive analysis to ascertain their quality and detect any adulteration.

The findings from these tests will determine subsequent administrative and legal actions against the establishment and responsible personnel. Health officials emphasized that accurate labeling, correct packaging, and vigilant monitoring of product expiration dates are essential to maintain consumer safety.

Increased Monitoring Ahead of Festivities

This enforcement action aligns with an anticipated rise in demand for dairy products and ghee due to the upcoming festive celebrations. Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur warned that as consumer demand spikes, so too does the risk of expired or substandard goods circulating in the market.

Dr. Kaur urged food business operators to prioritize high-quality ingredients, ensure truthful labeling, refrain from selling expired products, and adhere to proper storage guidelines. The department has pledged to continue conducting surprise inspections across commercial entities in Ludhiana to enforce compliance, with legal repercussions anticipated should laboratory results indicate any violations.
