Planet Fitness Launches Humorous Campaign to Combat Gymtimidation
The new campaign from Planet Fitness aims to eliminate gymtimidation and promote a welcoming atmosphere for all fitness levels.
Understanding Gymtimidation
Entering a gym can sometimes feel like walking into an exclusive club—intimidating and unwelcoming. This sense of 'gymtimidation' is a barrier for many potential fitness enthusiasts, as they grapple with feelings of inadequacy, whether it's due to intense grunting from serious lifters or the stylish fashion senses of fitness influencers.
A New Approach by Planet Fitness
To address this issue, Planet Fitness has launched an innovative campaign titled ‘Feeling Gymtimidated?’ in collaboration with Engine Group. Designed to highlight the stark contrast between traditional gym environments and their “Judgement Free Zone,” the campaign employs humor to create a relatable experience for all gym-goers.
Creative Campaign Elements
Launching with two memorable films, the campaign features characters that embody the extremes of gym culture. In ‘Bunny Babe,’ we meet the archetypal fitness influencer flaunting her pink workout gear and promoting personal programs. The second film, ‘Lunks,’ presents a humorous take on men lifting weights with exaggerated fervor, reminiscent of high-stakes events. Each narrative communicates the campaign's core message: there’s a gym where criticism and judgement are left at the door.
Accompanying these films are a series of nine social media reels that further extend the conversation around gymtimidation, keeping the dialogue flowing on social platforms.
Humor and Accessibility
Engine’s team, drawing from their successful experience in the U.S. market, leveraged a distinctively Australian sense of humor to make their message resonate. Creative Director Mike Fritz aptly pointed out the typical gym advertisements that encourage pushing limits, contrasting them with his team's aim to promote a space where individuals can work out freely and without pressure.
“We just wanted to make people smile and let them know there’s a place where they can do their thing, without the theatrics,” said Fritz.
The campaign's light-hearted touch doesn't stop at visual storytelling; a catchy acapella jingle accompanied by a tuba bassline adds to the playful atmosphere, leaving viewers with a sense of warmth and friendliness.
Inclusive Fitness for Everyone
Tim Weger, Managing Director at Engine, shared their overarching goal: to create a campaign that resonates with those who feel excluded from conventional gym spaces. The humor aims to grab attention, but the underlying invitation is genuine—everyone is welcome at Planet Fitness, regardless of their starting point.
George Andreolas, Head of Marketing for Planet Fitness Australia, echoed this sentiment, stating,
“Our ambition is to change the way Australians think and feel about going to the gym...Combining clever creative and relatable humour, we want to emphasize that fitness should be accessible and enjoyable for all.”
Campaign Rollout
This integrated national campaign spans multiple platforms including TV, digital media, social networks, OOH (out-of-home advertising), and radio, launching this week. With this initiative, Planet Fitness aims to dismantle the barriers that prevent people from pursuing a healthier lifestyle.
