Osivax Advances OVX836 with New Phase 2b Vaccine Insights
Osivax shares promising Phase 2b results for OVX836, paving the way for next-gen influenza vaccines via strategic partnerships.
OVX836 Phase 2b Trial Results
Osivax has successfully completed a Phase 2b trial for its innovative influenza vaccine, OVX836. This study focused on assessing the safety, efficacy, and immune responses of the vaccine among healthy adults in Europe.
With a total of 2,850 participants aged 18 to 59, the trial aimed to determine the vaccine’s ability to provide protection against influenza. However, it did not meet the primary efficacy endpoint of 50%. The reported vaccine efficacy (VE) was 24%, which was not statistically significant. Secondary endpoints showed point estimates indicating emerging efficacy trends, including a 28% VE for CDC-defined influenza-like illness.
Exploring Combination Strategies
Despite not reaching its defined target, the results from OVX836 underscore the potential for integrating this vaccine into a broader influenza prevention strategy. Osivax is exploring combination strategies that pair OVX836 with traditional seasonal influenza vaccines. This approach aims to combine OVX836's cellular immunity effects with the strain-specific protection offered by standard vaccines.
The company has entered partnerships with GC Biopharma and another undisclosed global pharmaceutical manufacturer to facilitate the development of these combination vaccines. The objective is to enhance overall vaccine efficacy significantly.
Insights from Osivax Leadership
“Large efficacy studies are not only about measuring clinical outcomes; they also help us understand new immune mechanisms in real-world settings,” explained Dr. Nicola Groth, Osivax's Chief Medical Officer.
Notably, the favorable safety profile observed in this trial is aligned with previous studies, which strengthens Osivax's confidence in the potential of nucleoprotein-targeted immunity.
“Our results indicate that OVX836 can complement traditional vaccines rather than replace them,” emphasized Alexandre Le Vert, CEO of Osivax. “By merging broad cellular immunity with specific antibody responses from existing vaccines, we aim to create next-generation solutions against seasonal influenza.”
Future Directions for OVX836
These strategic collaborations mark a significant step forward for Osivax. The goal is to achieve combined vaccine efficacy by developing a single injection that delivers both broad and strain-specific immune responses. A Phase 1/2 study examining this combination strategy is expected to commence in Q4 2027.
About OVX836
OVX836 is an innovative candidate that leverages the nucleoprotein (NP) of the influenza A virus, a stable antigen as opposed to the more volatile surface antigens. The use of Osivax’s oligoDOMTM technology enables the NP to assemble into nanoparticles, which inspires strong immune responses, both T-cell and B-cell mediated. OVX836 has undergone testing in seven clinical trials involving over 4,000 participants, yielding promising results in safety and immunogenicity.
Osivax: Pioneering Influenza Vaccines
