New Funding to Enhance Nutrition's Role in Infection Prevention

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, in collaboration with ASPHN, will explore nutrition's impact on infection prevention.

In a significant move to improve public health, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has announced a two-year initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This project will explore the intricate relationship between nutrition, the gut microbiome, and antimicrobial resistance.

Collaboration for Healthier Outcomes

Partnering with the Association of State Public Health Nutritionists (ASPHN), this initiative aims to gather evidence on how nutrition influences the risk of infections. Through a systematic review of current research, the Academy and ASPHN will investigate the impact of various dietary patterns and nutrition interventions.

This cooperative project is a part of the CDC's Building National Partnerships for the Prevention of Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases. The results will ultimately contribute to the development of crucial evidence-based guidance for healthcare practitioners.

Empowering Healthcare Professionals

Wylecia Wiggs Harris, the Academy's CEO, emphasized the vital role nutrition professionals play in infection prevention and public health. She remarked, "This initiative will help turn emerging research into practical recommendations that support healthcare professionals and improve patient care." The anticipated findings will serve as a foundation for developing valuable resources for clinical and community settings.

To support the implementation of these findings, the Academy and ASPHN plan to create various tools, such as implementation toolkits, educational materials, webinars, and continuing education opportunities. These resources will assist registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), nutrition and dietetics technicians (NDTRs), and other key health professionals in integrating this research into practice.

The Bigger Picture

Jami Rokala, president of ASPHN, highlighted the importance of understanding the links between nutrition, infection prevention, and population health. By bringing this knowledge to public health settings, professionals can enhance the well-being of the communities they serve.

The collaboration between the Academy and ASPHN signifies a promising step toward leveraging nutrition as a powerful tool in preventing infections and combating antimicrobial resistance. As this project progresses, it will pave the way for more informed approaches to health and disease prevention.
