Maharashtra FDA Shuts Down Licenses of Fortis Hospital and Sophia College Canteen

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken decisive action against food safety violations by suspending the licenses of two establishments: the kitchen at Fortis Hospital in Mulund and the canteen at Sophia College for Women. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure that food served in various institutions meets required safety standards.

Fortis Hospital Under Fire for Hygiene Issues

The FDA's inspection of the Fortis Hospital kitchen revealed alarming conditions. Among the serious infractions were findings such as the presence of cockroaches, food debris clogging drains, transport containers contaminated with fungus, and rusted kitchen utensils. These significant hygiene failures raised serious concerns regarding the safety of meals prepared for patients.

In response to the suspension, a spokesperson for Fortis Hospital emphasized that the organization prioritizes patient safety and hygienic treatment environments. They stated that Fortis had acknowledged the FDA's observations about the kitchen, which is operated by Sodexo India Services Pvt Ltd. The hospital has urged Sodexo to rectify these issues without delay and is actively reviewing steps taken to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. Moreover, the hospital is implementing alternative solutions to provide nutritious meals to patients and their families during this corrective period.

Sophia College Canteen License Suspension

In addition to Fortis, the FDA has also suspended the license of the canteen at Sophia College, located on Bhulabhai Desai Road, due to violations found during an inspection. Principal Anagha Tendulkar Patil confirmed that the college has promptly terminated the services of the canteen contractor following the FDA’s findings. She assured that efforts are underway to make the necessary improvements and that student wellbeing remains a top priority for the institution.

Statewide Drive Targets Food Safety Violations

This scrutiny is part of a larger initiative by the Maharashtra FDA, announced on October 16, aimed at enforcing food safety protocols across the state. Overall, 25 food establishments have had their business licenses suspended due to a variety of violations. Inspections have encompassed hotels, restaurants, canteens, and bakeries, with a notable seven establishments flagged in the Mumbai division alone.

The crackdown included various regions, with the other violated establishments found throughout the Konkan, Pune, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar divisions. Violations were identified according to Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, which is crucial for maintaining food hygiene and safety.

Among those affected were six Domino's outlets in Pune, highlighting that the FDA is committed to enforcing proper hygiene practices across all food service providers. The ramifications of these actions are intended to elevate food safety standards in kitchens serving vulnerable populations including patients, students, and community members.

The actions taken by the FDA underline the importance of rigorous adherence to food safety standards, as the health and safety of the public depend on the quality of food provided by these establishments.
