Macau Fitness Group Launches Event Lacking Hyrox Connection
The Macau-based fitness group plans its own competition, resembling Hyrox, despite having no official ties.
MACAU — A Macau fitness organization operating under the name Hyrox Association of Macau has confessed that it is not officially linked to the renowned global fitness event, Hyrox. This revelation comes after the worldwide brand intervened regarding the unauthorized usage of its trademarked name.
Upcoming Fitness Challenge with a twist
Despite the controversy, the Macau association is moving forward with its inaugural event slated for February, titled the Macau Fitness Run Challenge, which will take place on February 20 and 21, 2027, at the Galaxy International Convention Centre.
This event features an 8km run followed by eight functional workout stations, a format that bears a striking similarity to that of Hyrox, known globally for its combination of running and intense workouts, which includes sled pushes, rowing, and wall balls, among other exercises.
Community Concerns Rise
The unveiling of the Macau Fitness Run Challenge has raised eyebrows among local fitness enthusiasts. Many are questioning if this new event is merely an imitation of the well-established Hyrox model. The fitness community's concerns prompted a response from the true Hyrox enterprise.
Gary Wan, Hyrox’s Asia-Pacific managing director, confirmed that they have reached out to the Macau group to cease usage of the Hyrox brand. By the weekend, the association issued a clarification stating it is a legally registered entity in Macau but confirmed it holds no affiliation with the original Hyrox organization.
Clarifications and Changes in Names
While the group insisted that they are independently organizing this competition, intriguing details emerged regarding their naming. Although their Chinese name translates to Macau Fitness Run Association, official records indicate they are registered as the Hyrox Association of Macau. Their charter, filed in August, populates objectives such as promoting Hyrox sports within the Macau region.
During the launch dinner, Jofe Tam, the association’s president, elaborated on the upcoming race, promising prize money for both elite and team categories to encourage participants.
Even amidst the legal storm, the association claims it is committed to respecting intellectual property rights and providing factual information to the public. They also aim to further promote both running and functional fitness events throughout Macau.
Hyrox representatives have opted not to provide any additional comments following the clarification from the Macau association. The Macau government has also not responded to inquiries regarding this unfolding situation.
As it stands, Macau has yet to witness an official Hyrox event, and the global brand has indicated no immediate plans to host one in the region. Nonetheless, fitness lovers in Macau may look forward to their unique take on the 8km run and fitness challenge coming up next February. However, it won’t be an official Hyrox race.
