Jools Oliver Opens Up About Her ADHD and Autism Journey
A heartfelt conversation with Jools Oliver about her recent diagnoses of ADHD and autism.
Jools Oliver, the wife of renowned chef Jamie Oliver, has shared her journey of being diagnosed with both ADHD and autism. During a heartfelt conversation on the Lessons From Our Mothers podcast, hosted by Cressida Bonas, Jools opened up about her experiences and challenges following her diagnoses.
Understanding Her Diagnosis
At the age of 51, Jools recounted discovering her ADHD approximately four years ago, in her late forties. She expressed her struggles with health anxiety, which has made it difficult for her to embrace the medication prescribed for her condition. “I have the medication, but I resist taking it because I'm anxious something might happen,” she explained.
Her journey into understanding her neurodiversity began when some of her children were diagnosed with autism. This revelation prompted her to seek evaluation for herself. “I thought to myself, 'this sounds familiar,' so I pursued a diagnosis and found out that I also have autism,” she shared.
A New Self-Understanding
For Jools, understanding her ADHD and autism has been a double-edged sword. While she now has a clearer picture of herself, she admitted that the process can be exhausting. “Finding out what I truly have and what I've been dealing with is a bit overwhelming,” she confessed. She remarked that the realization has drained her energy, highlighting how debilitating the conditions can feel.
