Inspections Uncover Violations at Sweet Units in Bengaluru
A recent health inspection across sweet units in Bengaluru revealed multiple food safety violations, prompting fines and further evaluations.
The Food Safety Wing of the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration has taken significant steps to ensure food safety as the festive season approaches. On Saturday, during the third day of their extensive inspection drive, officials examined 100 sweet-manufacturing units and retail outlets across Bengaluru.
Overview of the Inspections
This initiative aimed to enforce compliance with food safety regulations, and it resulted in the collection of 113 food samples for testing, which have since been dispatched to Government Food Laboratories for thorough analysis.
During the inspections, authorities uncovered numerous violations, including unsanitary conditions in food preparation and storage areas. Moreover, they noted the absence of medical certificates for food handling personnel and various labeling deficiencies.
Key Findings and Actions Taken
This three-day inspection program, carried out from Thursday through Saturday, scrutinized a total of 286 sweet-manufacturing units and retail locations throughout the state. In total, 383 food samples were gathered over the duration of the inspections.
Officials issued notices to 40 food business operators for various non-compliance issues. Two operators faced immediate consequences with a fine amounting to ₹7,000, and 30 kg of misbranded khova was seized during the operation.
Continuing Vigilance and Enforcement
The Department of Food Safety is committed to maintaining high food safety and quality standards. The inspections will persist at any sweet-manufacturing units and retail outlets found violating regulations. Legal actions will be initiated in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 and the Licensing and Registration Regulations of 2011.
This proactive approach by food safety officials aims to secure the health of consumers, especially as celebrations lead to an increase in the consumption of sweets.
