GSK Sees 30% Profit Growth Driven by Medicines and Vaccines
GlaxoSmithKline's Q2 report shows a 30% increase in profit, fueled by strong vaccine and medicine sales.
GSK's Impressive Growth in Q2
GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK) has reported a remarkable rise in net profit, achieving a 30.4% increase year-on-year, bringing the total to ₹336 crore for the September quarter. This growth was largely driven by significant advancements in its General Medicines, Vaccines, and Specialty Medicines segments.
The company also saw a substantial boost in revenue, which climbed 20.8% to reach ₹1,184 crore, compared to ₹980 crore in the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, EBITDA experienced a rise of 19.8%, reaching ₹402 crore, up from ₹336 crore a year prior. However, this increase was accompanied by a slight reduction in EBITDA margin, which fell from 34.26% to 33.97%.
Factors Behind the Growth
GSK attributed the quarterly performance to a robust contribution from its Oncology sector, which has successfully completed its first full year of commercialization. The company implemented focused lifecycle management strategies that also contributed to this growth. Notably, the year-ago quarter faced challenges due to supply constraints and transitions related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), providing a favorable base for comparison.
Bhushan Akshikar, Managing Director of GSK India, expressed enthusiasm about the company's results, stating, “Our strong performance this quarter reflects the robust execution of our strategy to build a science-first, innovation-led business.” Akshikar further emphasized that the resilience demonstrated across their diverse portfolio underscores the strength of their well-established brands, innovative therapies, and the scientific diligence of their workforce.
Continued Focus on Innovation and Resilience
In line with global trends, GSK is intensifying efforts on its late-stage pipeline assets and preparing for key launches, particularly in Oncology and Adult Vaccination. Despite navigating a complex geopolitical climate, which has resulted in inflationary pressures and risks to supply chains, the company remains committed to enhancing its operational resilience.
The General Medicines segment showed particularly strong performance, with several key brands outpacing their respective markets. Well-known products such as Augmentin, Calpol, Ceftum, and T-Bact have managed to capture greater market share. In response to evolving patient requirements, GSK has also launched new formulations, including Calpol 500 Suspension and Eltroxin in two dosages.
Expansion in the Vaccines Sector
GSK's Vaccines division also demonstrated notable growth, especially in the private sector pediatric vaccine market. The company highlighted significant demand for Shingrix, its recombinant herpes zoster vaccine, as they bolster campaigns promoting adult vaccination among individuals over 50 years old, particularly those with pre-existing cardiovascular and metabolic conditions.
To enhance its supply chain resilience, GSK is diversifying sourcing strategies and implementing robust contingency plans. These proactive measures have played a key role in stabilizing both local and global supply chains, facilitating sustained operational levels.
Following the earnings announcement, shares of GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals increased by ₹44.95, or 1.78%, closing at ₹2,573.30 on the BSE.
