FSSAI Takes Action Against Firms for Food Safety Violations
The FSSAI has enforced strict measures against Zepto and three other companies for food safety breaches and misleading claims.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recently launched enforcement actions against several companies, including the rapid delivery service Zepto, over serious concerns regarding food safety regulations and misleading advertising practices.
Details of the Violations
FSSAI's actions target Zepto, Bakelite Food Processing, HealthyHey Foods LLP, and BMS Lifescience following allegations that these companies breached food safety mandates and engaged in deceptive labeling practices. This initiative aims to ensure that consumers receive safe food products and truthful information.
In a post on social media platform X, the regulatory body underscored its mission to protect the interests of consumers while enforcing compliance across the food industry. “FSSAI remains committed to protecting consumer interests and ensuring compliance,” the authority stated, reflecting its ongoing commitment to food safety.
Complaint Against Zepto
The focused action against Zepto stems from a complaint made by a user on X. This individual reported that Zepto delivered two packs of besan (a type of gram flour) that were past their use-by date. Following this report, FSSAI has mandated Zepto to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The company is required to provide detailed documentation concerning the order, delivery practices, warehouse conditions, and the seller involved. Additionally, Zepto has been asked to explain how this incident occurred and what steps have been taken to manage the situation. It must confirm whether the affected stock has been withdrawn, if customers were informed, and if any refunds were processed. The regulator expects a plan outlining corrective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Issues with Other Companies
Aside from Zepto, FSSAI's scrutiny has also zeroed in on Bakelite Food Processing and Storia Foods & Beverages due to misleading product claims. Bakelite’s item, the ‘Puneri Cream Roll’, available on platforms like Zepto and Blinkit, was found to create confusion regarding its true nature, being presented as “Crispy & Creamy”.
Similarly, Storia Foods and Beverages faced issues with its claim that one of its products is “equivalent to 100% fruit juice (reconstituted)”, which was deemed non-compliant with the relevant regulations.
Broader Implications for Food Safety
This enforcement activity highlights the increasing vigilance that FSSAI is applying in relation to food safety and the marketing standards that companies must uphold. As consumers become more aware and concerned about food safety issues, regulatory bodies are compelled to take decisive actions against those failing to meet established guidelines.
FSSAI’s efforts signify a broader commitment to maintaining high standards in food supply chains, ensuring that consumers can trust the products they purchase. Continuous monitoring and prompt corrective measures are essential to safeguard public health and maintain confidence in the food sector.
