Eli Lilly's Foundayo Receives Support for EU Approval
The EMA committee recommends Foundayo for obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment, marking a step towards its EU launch.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has taken a significant step forward by recommending Eli Lilly's Foundayo (orforglipron) for weight management and treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. This advisory from the EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) paves the way for potential marketing authorization in the European Union.
What’s Next for Foundayo?
The European Commission, which is responsible for the final approval, generally adheres to the CHMP's recommendations. A decision is anticipated within the next few weeks, which could further establish Foundayo in the European market.
Clinical Evaluation Insights
The CHMP's support is grounded in robust clinical data drawn from extensive trials. For weight management, they evaluated two major studies involving over 4,740 adults facing obesity or overweight challenges. These studies included adults without diabetes but suffering from weight-related health issues, as well as those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
For the type 2 diabetes indication, the CHMP reviewed outcomes from four pivotal trials that assessed 3,765 adults whose blood sugar levels were inadequately managed through diet, exercise, or existing diabetes medications. In these trials, Foundayo was tested alone and alongside other diabetes treatments, with comparisons made to placebo options and known therapies such as dapagliflozin and oral semaglutide.
Unique Mechanism of Action
At the heart of Foundayo's effectiveness is orforglipron, a small non-peptide molecule that stimulates the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor. Unlike many other treatments, this medication is designed for oral administration, allowing for convenient daily intake. Notably, it can be taken at any time of day, without restrictions on food or water.
Competitive Landscape in the EU
Should the European Commission endorse the CHMP's recommendation, Foundayo would join the ranks of other oral GLP-1 receptor agonists available in Europe. It would become the second such treatment on the market for weight management, following the approval of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill in July.
In terms of type 2 diabetes management, Foundayo will compete against established brands like Novo's Rybelsus, which has been a strong presence in the EU since 2020 and has generated over $3 billion in revenue. The recommended approval marks a new challenge between Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk in the highly competitive landscape of oral GLP-1 treatments.
Expanding Global Reach
Eli Lilly's proactive approach in gaining regulatory approvals for orforglipron signifies their commitment to tapping into the vast market potential for obesity and type 2 diabetes, far beyond the borders of the United States. In fact, during the first half of 2026, products like Mounjaro and Zepbound accounted for an impressive 65% of Lilly's total revenue, illustrating the financial stakes involved.
As Lilly prepares for the next phases of Foundayo’s approval process, the positive CHMP opinion symbolizes a strategic advance for the company’s presence in Europe.
