Collaboration Aims to Boost Heart Health Awareness in Kuala Lumpur

IJN and local authorities aim to enhance heart health screenings and education across Kuala Lumpur.

The National Heart Institute (IJN) is set to partner with the Federal Territories administration and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to expand heart health awareness and screening initiatives throughout Kuala Lumpur.

Promoting Preventive Heart Health

Datuk Dr. Shaiful Azmi Yahaya, the acting group CEO of IJN, is enthusiastic about the potential of this collaboration. He emphasized that the institute can leverage its expertise to enhance public education about heart health and preventive care.

With the support of the city's facilities and community networks, as well as transport infrastructure, IJN aims to promote early detection of heart issues and encourage healthier lifestyles. Dr. Yahaya stressed that the focus should be on preventing illnesses rather than just treating them when they arise.

Government Support for Heart Health Initiatives

Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh expressed her commitment to exploring partnership opportunities with IJN to boost heart health awareness and screening efforts in Kuala Lumpur. Her vision is to improve access to these health services, particularly benefiting senior citizens and individuals with mobility challenges.

Recently, at the launch of the MRT Raja Uda–Institut Jantung Negara station branding, Yeoh outlined plans to enhance patient access, noting that DBKL will sponsor a covered pedestrian walkway to connect the MRT station with the hospital.

Enhancing Accessibility and Visibility

This proposed walkway is a continuation of IJN’s initiatives aimed at bettering access to healthcare. Notable among these efforts was the completion of a pedestrian bridge across Sungai Bunus in 2022, which provides easier access to the hospital from the Yayasan Selangor building.

Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, the CEO of MRT Corp, elaborated on the significance of the station branding in linking public transportation with essential services. This initiative is expected to raise awareness about IJN among commuters and improve the hospital’s visibility.

The partnership between IJN and local authorities also aims to streamline the journey for patients from the transport station to the hospital, making healthcare more accessible for those in need.

Future Implications for Heart Health in Kuala Lumpur

The branding agreement, finalized during the Transport Expo Asia 2026 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, marks a promising step towards fostering a culture of heart health awareness in the capital. IJN's collaboration with local government bodies signifies a growing commitment to public health and the importance of early screening and education.

As these initiatives take shape, Kuala Lumpur stands to see a positive shift towards improved heart health outcomes for its residents, thanks to the joint efforts of IJN, DBKL, and the Federal Territories administration.
