A special ceremony in Chennai honored those living with Type 2 diabetes for over 50 years and recognized Type 1 students for their academic success.
As World Diabetes Day approaches on November 14, a significant ceremony was held in Chennai to honor individuals living with Type 2 diabetes for over 50 years, along with exceptional students managing Type 1 diabetes. The event took place at Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, organized by the DMDSC and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) in collaboration with the Hinduja Foundation.
Recognizing Long-Term Diabetes Management
The Golden Jubilee Awards celebrated those individuals who have navigated the challenges of Type 2 diabetes for five decades or more. This recognition underscores the importance of ongoing treatment, lifestyle adjustments, and regular monitoring for sustained health. Dr. V. Mohan, the Chairman of DMDSC and MDRF, emphasized the significance of these long-term journeys, stating that they reflect not just resilience, but also the commitment and discipline required for effective diabetes management.
Academic Achievements of Young Diabetics
In addition to the Golden Jubilee Awards, the ceremony featured the Hinduja Foundation T1D Academic Excellence Awards, which recognized outstanding students living with Type 1 diabetes. These awards are designed to encourage young individuals to pursue their educational goals, regardless of the challenges posed by their condition. Dr. Ashish Mendhi, Programme Director at Hinduja Foundation, highlighted the importance of providing equal opportunities to these students and remarked that celebrating their achievements can serve as motivation for others.
The presence of distinguished diabetes specialists, including Dr. Ashish Mendhi, Dr. R. M. Anjana, and Dr. Ranjit Unnikrishnan, added to the significance of the event. They all participated in presenting awards, with Dr. Mendhi delivering the keynote address that inspired attendees to foster greater awareness and support for those managing diabetes.
Inspiration and Hope for the Future
Dr. Mohan voiced that the experiences shared by award recipients not only highlight the significance of effective treatment but also act as a beacon of hope for many facing similar challenges. Their stories showcase what can be achieved with dedication and the right management strategies. The ceremony aimed not only to honor these remarkable individuals but also to promote broader understanding and awareness surrounding diabetes management.
This initiative emphasizes that living with diabetes does not mean relinquishing goals and aspirations. Instead, it illustrates the strength and perseverance of those affected, paving the way for greater support and acknowledgment in society.
