Bavarian Nordic Contributes to Global Mpox Vaccine Efforts
Bavarian Nordic is providing a total of 225,000 doses of Mpox vaccine to strengthen global health response.
Bavarian Nordic is taking significant steps to strengthen the global response to mpox by donating 75,000 doses of its MVA-BN® vaccine and supplying an additional 150,000 doses. This initiative is part of a broader effort to establish an emergency stockpile, ensuring that vaccines are available when outbreaks occur.
A Milestone in Global Preparedness
The formation of this emergency stockpile marks a key milestone in global mpox preparedness. It aims to ensure that vaccines are equitably distributed, allowing communities to access timely protection against this viral disease.
Partnership with Global Health Organizations
Managed by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision and hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the stockpile facilitates the deployment of vaccines to countries facing outbreaks. Initial support for this initiative has been provided by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
“Infectious diseases disregard borders. Communities must have prompt access to vaccines as outbreaks arise,” said Hitesh Sahni, Senior Vice President of Public Preparedness at Bavarian Nordic. “The establishment of this global mpox vaccine emergency stockpile is crucial in fortifying preparedness for future outbreaks, ultimately protecting populations and aiding public health responses.”
About MVA-BN Vaccine
The MVA-BN (Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic) vaccine is the only non-replicating vaccine for mpox currently approved in multiple regions, including the U.S., Switzerland, and the EU. Originally developed as a smallpox vaccine in collaboration with the U.S. government, it is now employed to protect those at risk of smallpox or mpox.
Bavarian Nordic has played a vital role in supplying this vaccine to national stockpiles, helping over 70 countries increase access during the recent mpox outbreaks. The vaccine received WHO prequalification in 2024 for use in individuals aged 12 and older, expanding its reach further with European approval for children aged 2 to under 12.
Future Directions
Looking ahead, Bavarian Nordic is engaged in ongoing clinical studies to enhance the availability of MVA-BN for other vulnerable groups. Steps are also being taken to improve manufacturing processes to scale up production as demand rises.
