Balancing Food Safety and Environmental Sustainability in Packaging

Experts discuss the need for innovative food packaging that ensures safety while promoting sustainability at a recent seminar in Hanoi.

Workshop Highlights New Trends in Food Packaging

A recent seminar held in Hanoi brought together nearly 250 participants from various sectors to discuss the challenges and innovations in food packaging. Organized by the Vietnam Association of Food Science and Technology (VINAFOSA), along with the National Institute for Food Control (NIFC), Tetra Pak Vietnam, and TH Group, the event celebrated VINAFOSA's 25th anniversary.

Importance of Food Safety

During the seminar, Lê Văn Giang, chairman of VINAFOSA, emphasized the critical role that food safety plays in public health and economic development. He highlighted that with increasing demands for safety and sustainability within the food industry, innovative packaging technologies are essential.

Giang noted that food packaging does much more than just store and transport food; it directly influences food safety and aids in minimizing environmental impacts. As global supply chains and food processing technologies evolve, managing these risks becomes increasingly complex.

Regulatory Landscape and Technological Adaptations

The deputy director of the Ministry of Health's Vietnam Food Administration, Bùi Đức Lập, stressed the need for improved food safety management strategies that focus on risk assessment, market inspections, and effective monitoring. He pointed out that reinforcing testing, verification, and traceability is critical to tackling potential safety concerns.

Moreover, the Vietnam Food Administration is in the process of reviewing its national technical regulations, including those specifically related to food-contact packaging. Proposed changes aim to enhance risk control and clarify responsibilities for compliance.

Strategies for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

In addition to safety considerations, discussions at the seminar also focused on packaging innovations that promote resource efficiency. Nguyễn Thanh Giang, managing director of Tetra Pak Vietnam, voiced the importance of integrating safety and quality measures throughout the entire production process. She advocated for approaches that incorporate both process and packaging innovations to mitigate risks effectively.

Efforts to transition towards environmentally friendly packaging involve minimizing material usage without compromising food preservation, and enhancing the practicality of recycling systems.

TH Group showcased its own advancements in packaging design, highlighting efforts such as material optimization and weight reduction. These initiatives have led to a significant decrease in plastic usage, shaving off around 600 tonnes annually, and yielding substantial cost savings.

Collaborative Efforts for a Circular Economy

Representatives from TH Group mentioned their involvement in the Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO Vietnam), which has collected over 21,000 tonnes of milk cartons since its inception in 2024. This indicates a growing potential for environmentally sustainable practices within the packaging sector.

During a panel discussion titled "Completing the Ecosystem for Safe and Sustainable Food Production in Vietnam," stakeholders exchanged insights on legal requirements, risk identification, and strategies to prevent safety and legal risks associated with food-contact materials.

Through collaboration and embracing innovative solutions, attendees aimed to foster responsible production practices and advance the development of a circular economy in Vietnam's food sector.

VINAFOSA's Role in Promoting Food Safety

Established in 2001, VINAFOSA has played a vital role in uniting experts and practitioners focused on food safety. Its efforts include knowledge dissemination and encouraging cooperation among researchers, regulators, and businesses to bolster public health and ensure food safety.

The seminar served not only as a celebration of VINAFOSA's achievements but also as an opportunity to reinforce stakeholder collaboration as the food industry confronts evolving regulations and sustainability challenges.
