The NHS spring COVID-19 vaccination programme starts this week, offering potentially lifesaving protection to millions of older people and those with weakened immune systems.
Tens of thousands of appointments are available nationwide each day at GP practices and community pharmacies. People eligible now include anyone aged 75 and over, older residents in care homes, and people who are immunosuppressed.
COVID-19 circulates year-round and can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups. Immunity from previous vaccination can wane and the virus can change, so topping up protection reduces the risk of severe illness and hospital admission.
On 16 April 2026, the COVID-19 Inquiry report by Baroness Hallett cited a study estimating that, by March 2023, COVID-19 vaccines had saved around 475,000 lives across England and Scotland.
Those eligible will receive an NHS invitation, but you do not need to wait. You can book through the NHS App, arrange online at https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/vaccination-and-booking-services/book-covid-19-vaccination/, attend a walk-in site (find one at https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/vaccination-and-booking-services/find-a-walk-in-covid-19-vaccination-site/), or call 119 free of charge if you cannot access the internet.
NHS Director of Vaccination Caroline Temmink said: “Viruses like COVID-19 circulate all year and can be just as dangerous for those who are vulnerable. Previous immunity can wane over time, so we encourage everyone who is eligible to come forward as soon as possible to get protected. You do not need to wait for an invite to book—visit the NHS website, use the NHS App or call 119 to get an appointment in your diary.”
