The NHS is reminding people to come forward for lifesaving and planned care as usual on the final day of resident doctor strike action.
The industrial action began at 7am on Friday 14 November and is scheduled to run until 7am on Wednesday 19 November. Patients should attend any planned appointments unless they have been contacted to reschedule. Primary, urgent and emergency care services remain available for those who need them.
NHS England’s National Medical Director, Professor Meghana Pandit, said hospitals and staff have been working extremely hard through day five of this round of strikes, while also managing Storm Claudia and a heavy flu season. She thanked staff filling gaps and urged patients to seek care as needed.
In a life-threatening emergency call 999 or go to A&E. For serious but less urgent problems use NHS 111 by phone or online, or visit an urgent treatment centre (UTC) to be seen by a clinician. Where possible, contact your GP for urgent advice.
The UK Health Security Agency reports that flu and COVID-19 cases in England are rising, with a peak expected in the coming weeks. Because flu can make vulnerable people seriously ill and increase pressure on hospitals, the NHS encourages anyone eligible to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Eligibility details are available on the NHS website.
